Different ways of alopecia treatment

We know, there are many types of alopecia but each one is treated another way. Another way goes a baldness therapy of the health origin, another way – inherited and another one is the therapy of the mental origin. I will introduce briefly different methods of treatment joining them to the particular type of hair loss.

1. Minoxidil, Finasteride, Nanoxidil, Aminexil

These are the basic drugs in case of the androgenic alopecia. Minoxidil is also used for the alopecia areata, anagen and telogen effluvium.

Minoxidil - stimulates the hair follicles, turns back the hair miniaturization process. It blocks DHT – the substance which is responsible for the androgenic alopecia.

Finasteride - is only for men and his main activity which blocks secreting of DHT.

Nanoxidil - it is the improved molecule of minoxidil. Its molecular mass is smaller than the mass of minoxidil and that’s why it gets more effectively to the deeper layers of skin, it is more durable. It doesn’t cause any side effects like minoxidil.

Aminexil - it activates in the anagen phase, it stops the perifollicular fibrosis – appearing of collagen around them and that’s the reason why follicles are able to resist longer.

2. Corticosteroids

Type of alopecia: total alopecia, traction alopecia and alopecia areata.

The treatment with corticosteroids focuses only on anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive and anti - proliferative active. They increase the production of the hormone which is made by the adrenal gland. They handle perfectly the alopecia of the auto - immunologic origin.

3. Laser beam treatment

Type of alopecia: the most kinds of effluvium, especially: androgenic, traction, telogen, anagen and areata alopecia.

It consists in subjecting the hair follicles the laser operation with low power which begins the process of healing by reaching getting deep into the skin. Low energy laser beam acts in a bio stimulating way, initiating the growth of production of ATP. The laser increases the activity of the cells, introduces hair in the active growth phase, recedes the miniaturization process of the hair and stimulates the growth of new hair.

4. Photochemotherapy

The type of alopecia: areata.

Photochemotherapy is the combination of a phototherapy with a chemotherapy. The treatment involves giving the psoralen – the photosentizing substance which is also exposed to the ultraviolet light.

5. Therapy using a magnetic field

Type of alopecia: androgenic, areata.

The treatment is carried out on the basis of the cells’ stimulation with the magnetic field of the low induction. This therapy is widely used. It is believed that it increases among others the activity of ATP, strengthens the immune system, speeds up the metabolism and blood flow and then occurs the faster transport of nutritients to the hair bulbs.

6. DCP

Type of alopecia: areata.

This therapy involves the administration of the substance called DCP on the scalp in order to induce the allergic reaction. A sensitizing substance causes the skin irritation, exfoliation, itching and finally – the hair growth.

7. Hair transplants

Type of alopecia: most kinds of alopecia, especially: cicatricial, androgenic and traction.

Small flaps of skin covered with hair are taken from the particular part of the head (usually the back one, insensitive to DHT) and transplanted on particular places of baldness during several sessions. So far, transplants are the most effective form of treatment for baldness.

8. Supplementation

Type of alopecia: most kinds of alopecia, especially: postnatal, androgenic, telogen and anagen.

The reason for alopecia can also be deficiencies of certain elements in the body. Supplementation is based mainly on administration of vitamins, excluding vitamin A. The diet is filled in iron, biotin and proteins. At the postnatal alopecia, the supplementation includes administration of thyroid gland, progesterone and estradiol.

9. Cosmetic preparation

Type of alopecia: most kinds of alopecia.

They are used mainly as a supplement to the basic treatment. Shampoos, conditioners, oils or creams often contain nanosomes or other molecules arranged to penetrate into the skin and initiate the hair growth.

10. Drugs of the group SSRI

Type of alopecia: trichotillomania.

The therapy, taking into account the antidepressants, in order to increase the stimulation of cells, stimulates them with serotonin. The operation of these drugs leads to increasing the concentration of serotonin. This is how are treated, among others, the reasons for depression, which is considered as one of the factors of trichotillomania.

11. Psychotherapy

Type of alopecia: trichotillomania.

One of the methods of trichotillomania treatment is the cognitive – behavioural one. It is intended to identify stress factors, phobias, fears, thoughts of the patient, correcting errors in them and learning about training techniques in order to subjugate these factors. An important role plays the attending physician whose task is to motivate a patient to do the particular tasks, behaviours, etc. The strengthening of the introduced, right behaviours is also important.
